If you’ve been following the good news regarding raspberries & cancer the last few years, you probably won’t find this surprising, but if you’re new to what science has been saying about this delicious fruit, then this story will certainly make you smile : ) To catch you up, raspberries have recently been shown to have some major cancer-preventive and even cancer-fighting abilities…past studies on rodents have shown that raspberries can inhibit oral, esophageal, and colon cancer, and one impressive study I know of has suggested that ellagic acid, a major component of raspberries, may actually increase the cancer-killing effects of radiation while protecting non-cancerous cells from damage (Bhosle et al.)
Now, the journal Cancer and Nutrition reports that researchers at Ohio State University’s Department of Radiology have found two components of black raspberries, ferulic acid and beta-sitosterol, and one from freeze-dried black raspberries, that can block the growth of pre-cancerous and cancerous oral epithelial cells, while leaving normal oral cells alone. Good news for us fruit lovers, and great news for anyone interested in avoiding cancer all together : )
